10 Simple Low-Tox Swaps for Busy Moms (That Don’t Cost a Fortune)
When I decided earlier this year to pursue a less toxic lifestyle, I could practically sense the panic in my husband.
I think he assumed I was about to throw everything in our house away and replace it with $40 organic hand soap and imported glass jars.
And honestly, fair.
Because one of the first things you notice when you start looking into low-tox living is this:
The healthier option usually costs more.
I can’t pretend that’s not true.
But I also think there’s this idea online that you either have to completely overhaul your life overnight or not even try at all.
And for most families, neither extreme is the answer.
It definitely wasn’t for ours.
So instead of throwing everything out and starting over, we’ve slowly started making swaps where we can. That approach has made these changes far more sustainable for us.
Because the goal isn’t perfection.
It’s awareness.
And then making better choices where it makes sense and where the budget allows.
Truthfully, this is a tricky post to write because everyone’s version of “clean” can vary quite a bit. What feels worth prioritizing to one family may not to another. I’m simply sharing what has worked for us and the places we decided to start.
And this feels important to say too: this post is not about fear or pressure. Most of us aren’t trying to create perfect homes. We’re just trying to make a few better choices without adding more overwhelm to our lives.
Start Here First
Before buying anything, I think it helps to ask two questions:
- What’s our actual budget for this?
- Is there any wiggle room for a slightly better option?
Because while the “best of the best” products may not be realistic for your family right now, there’s often a better option than the one currently in your cart.
That’s usually where I start.
And one of the tools I use most is the EWG Healthy Living app.
It rates products based on ingredients and breaks down why products receive the ratings they do.
For cleaning products, ratings go from EWG Verified to F.
For beauty, personal care, and food products, they’re rated from EWG Verified through 10.
One thing worth noting is that brands do pay for the official EWG Verified badge. So don’t panic if your product doesn’t have the badge itself. Sometimes an A-rated or 1-rated product is still a really solid option.
The app also lets you click into individual ingredients so you can understand what’s actually inside the product you’re using.
That alone has helped me become a more thoughtful and aware consumer.

10 Affordable Low-Tox Swaps for Busy Moms
I’ve mostly focused on the things we use the most often.
The products touching our skin daily.
The things we clean with constantly.
The things our kids interact with all day.
Not perfectly.
Just intentionally.
1. Branch Basics Concentrate
Branch Basics has probably been the biggest heavy hitter in our house.
One concentrate makes:
- glass cleaner
- all-purpose cleaner
- bathroom cleaner
- hand soap
- laundry detergent
So while the upfront cost felt higher initially, it actually replaced multiple products in our home.
And that’s helped offset the cost a lot more than I expected.

2. Castile Soap
Castile soap has so many uses.
Right now we mostly use it for hand soap, but people also use it for:
- homemade cleaning sprays
- body wash
- shaving soap
- mopping floors
- washing produce
- pet shampoo
- makeup brush cleaner
I’ve even read people brush their teeth with it, though I personally haven’t crossed that line yet.

3. Laundry Detergent
This was a big one for me.
As a family of five, I do laundry daily. And my boys have incredibly sensitive skin, so this felt like one of the more important places to start.
We switched to a lower-tox detergent instead of the heavily fragranced ones I had always used before.
I think I expected to miss the strong laundry scent more than I do.
4. Wool Dryer Balls
This was one of the easiest swaps.
Instead of dryer sheets, we now use wool dryer balls.
They last forever, reduce waste, and help cut down on synthetic fragrance in laundry.
You can even add a few drops of essential oil if you want a light scent.

5. Shampoo + Conditioner
Shampoo and conditioner are newer for me.
And honestly, I was skeptical.
I have very combo-prone hair and scalp. Dry in some places, oily in others, and prone to dandruff.
So I fully expected this category to be difficult.
But I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised.
Not every “clean” beauty product works well, but this has been one I’ve genuinely enjoyed using.
6. Deodorant
This category was rough for me!
I tried so many deodorants.
With baking soda.
Without baking soda.
And almost all of them broke me out so badly that I stopped wearing deodorant altogether for a while because my skin needed a break.
This is the first deodorant that has consistently worked well for me without irritation.
Which felt like a small miracle after wasting so much money on deodorants that only left me itching and breaking out.

For the Moms
A few of the swaps that mattered most to me involved products my kids use every single day.
7. Diapers
We switched to a chlorine-free diaper option that still felt affordable for our family.
Is it the cleanest diaper on the market? It’s not. But the cleanest on the market isn’t in our budget.
But it’s better than what we were using before, and that mattered to me.
One thing I did notice:
I needed to size down compared to the brand we used previously.
8. Cleaner Diaper Cream
My kids are very prone to diaper rash.
But interestingly, since switching diapers, we’ve noticed less irritation overall.
I still keep diaper cream on hand because motherhood keeps you humble, but we use it far less often now.

9. Stainless Steel Kids Cups
We slowly started replacing some of our plastic kids cups with stainless steel ones.
They were slightly more expensive upfront, but they’re reusable, durable, and something we use every single day.
A little overstimulated mom warning though: if you have hardwood floors, those stainless steel cups hitting the ground will send a chill down your spine.
Still worth it.
And let’s be real, as long as the bottle had their favorite Disney character, the kids didn’t care at all.
10. Organic Cotton Pads
Not to get too personal, but this one mattered to me.
That area of the body is highly absorbent.
And once I learned more about what can be in conventional products, switching felt worth it.
Again, not from fear.
Just from awareness.

You Don’t Have to Do Everything at Once
I think that’s the biggest thing I want to say if you’re feeling overwhelmed by all of this.
You do not have to overhaul your entire life overnight. I share a simple 3-step process you repeat each month.
Before buying Branch Basics, I made my own glass cleaner and all-purpose spray.
People make their own:
- deodorant
- toothpaste
- laundry detergent
- household cleaners
There are ways to move toward this lifestyle slowly.
And honestly, I think slow is what makes it sustainable.
Start With What Gets Used Most
That’s the approach that’s helped me the most.
Not trying to fix everything.
Not panic-buying “clean” versions of every product online.
Just paying attention to what we use every day and making better choices one step at a time.
Because living a lower-tox lifestyle doesn’t have to mean blowing your budget.
Small changes still matter.
Especially the ones that actually last.
