Summer Wardrobe Mistakes That Make Getting Dressed Harder

Sometimes I scroll Pinterest in the summer and wonder:

Do people actually wear these outfits in real life?

Not because they aren’t beautiful. Many of them are.

But somewhere between the layered jewelry, overly structured pieces, dry-clean-only dresses, and complicated sandals, I start wondering if getting dressed is supposed to feel this complicated.

Especially in the middle of real life.

Because most summer days for me look like:

  • work
  • kids
  • errands
  • playgrounds
  • quick dinners
  • trying not to melt in the heat

And over time, I realized some of the things I was buying for summer were actually making getting dressed harder instead of easier.

Not because the clothes were bad.

They just didn’t fit the life I was actually living.

Here are a few of the mistakes I’ve made and have to fight remaking. See if you can relate to any…

1. Buying for Vacation Instead of Real Life

One of the biggest mistakes I made was buying clothes for the version of my life that happens maybe 5% of the time.

Vacation outfits.
Date night dresses.
Trendy, bold pieces I imagined myself wearing more than I actually would.

Meanwhile, what was I reaching for every single week?

Linen button-downs.
Comfortable sandals.
Easy tanks.
Tennis skorts.
Simple layers.

The pieces that worked for real life kept getting reworn while the “fun” purchases sat in my closet waiting for an occasion that rarely came.

And with three kids four and under, my everyday wardrobe matters a lot more than my once-a-month date night outfit.

2. Buying Pieces That Only Work for One Outfit

I used to recreate Pinterest outfits piece by piece.

But then I’d realize half those items didn’t work with anything else I owned.

And suddenly I had a closet full of isolated outfits instead of versatile pieces.

That shift alone changed how I shop now.

Before buying something, I usually ask:

  • Can I wear this multiple ways?
  • Does this work with pieces I already own?
  • Would I still wear this if trends changed next summer?

I think that’s part of what I admire so much about women who really know their style.

They look classic, but more than that, they don’t look overly fussed over.

There’s a confidence in that.

Like they know what works for them and they’re no longer trying to reinvent themselves every season.

That mindset has simplified getting dressed for me more than any trend ever has.

3. Buying Clothes That Don’t Work for Real Life

For me, this mostly looked like summer tanks and dresses that required a strapless bra or dry cleaning.

And for a date night? Sure.

But for the playground? No thanks.

If an outfit requires constant adjusting, special undergarments, or me thinking too hard about whether I can bend over while chasing toddlers, I already know I’m not going to wear it often.

That realization has saved me from so many unnecessary purchases.

I still want to feel pulled together.

I just want my clothes to function in real life too.

4. Owning Lots of Clothes But No Outfit Formulas

This one changed everything for me.

I realized the women whose style I admired most usually weren’t wearing wildly different outfits every day.

They just had repeatable formulas that worked.

Now I rely on a handful of simple summer outfit formulas that make getting dressed feel easier.

Mom Day Formula

Tennis skort + tank or tee + cardigan

I feel put together, but still practical enough to unexpectedly climb through the Chic-fil-A play place if motherhood requires it.

Trousers + tee+ sweater over the shoulders + heels or sandals

The goal isn’t more outfits.

It’s fewer decisions.

And once I started building repeatable formulas instead of chasing new outfits constantly, getting dressed became much less overwhelming.

This is also a huge part of why building a capsule wardrobe helped me so much. Not because I suddenly owned less, but because the pieces started working together more naturally.

If you’re newer to capsule wardrobes, I shared more about how I started mine here.

5. Buying Fabrics That Don’t Actually Work in Heat

This was another big shift for me and a newer one.

Some summer clothes technically look cute, but feel miserable once you’re outside for more than ten minutes.

I started paying more attention to breathable fabrics like:

  • linen
  • cotton
  • lightweight natural fibers
  • even merino wool

Not just from a style standpoint, but from a comfort standpoint too.

Natural fibers have also started mattering to me more from a health perspective, but they simply function better in summer too.

I bought my husband a merino wool tee recently and he was shocked by how soft and breathable it was.

And for me, linen pants have become one of those pieces I constantly reach for.

I almost didn’t buy them because I wondered how often I’d realistically wear them.

Turns out… a lot.

I shared 7 ways I’ve worn them recently here.

6. Thinking I Need Something New for Every Occasion

This one still gets me sometimes.

Especially before trips.

There’s always this subtle feeling that I need:

  • new vacation outfits
  • new sandals
  • new dresses

Even though the people on the trip have never seen the clothes I already own.

Social media makes it really easy to feel like every season requires a full wardrobe refresh.

But repeat after me:
repeating outfits is normal.

And having pieces you genuinely love wearing over and over again is actually the goal.

That’s a big part of why my summer capsule wardrobe has worked so well for me. The pieces aren’t overly complicated, but they work across multiple kinds of days.

And if you’re trying to pack lighter this summer too, my travel capsule wardrobe follows the same idea.

What I’m Learning About Summer Style

I still love getting dressed.

I still appreciate beautiful clothes and thoughtful style.

But I no longer want my wardrobe to feel disconnected from my real life.

I want it to support my life.

To feel simple.
Repeatable.
Easy to wear.
Pulled together without requiring so much effort.

And I think that’s why simplifying my wardrobe has changed more than just my closet.

It’s helped me stop chasing newness quite so much and start paying attention to what actually works.

If you’re trying to simplify your closet without losing your personal style, that’s exactly what I walk through inside the Linen & Light Closet Method.

It’s the same process that helped me build a wardrobe around my actual life instead of the version I imagined myself living.
