simplifying life as a mom

The Closet That’s Changing My Soul

Mom sitting in closet with Bible and coffee — reflecting how closet clutter mirrors the soul.

I have a confession: I have a clothes obsession.

No, really. I could scroll GRWM videos for hours. And the number of times I’ve opened the LTK app just to see what new thing I “needed”? Embarrassing.

Then came a Friday afternoon a few months ago. All three babies were napping at the same time (pause for applause—because that never happens). I decided it was finally time to tackle my closet.

Amazon had delivered three sets of hangers in six months and somehow…I was out again. Clothes on the floor, piled on racks, stuffed in drawers. My husband Tim and I don’t share a closet, and when he walked in mid-clean-out, his eyes went wide:

“Whoa, babe.”

He wasn’t wrong. Things had gotten out of control.

Mom of littles realizing her closet and soul both need less clutter and more space for God.

When the Closet Became a Mirror

Over the next three weeks, I hauled eight giant trash bags of clothes to Goodwill. Eight. And even after all that, my closet still looked full—wedged hangers, stacks of denim, “someday” dresses.

But here’s the thing: as I stuffed clothes into those garbage bags, Jesus started showing me something deeper.

My closet was a physical picture of my cluttered and disordered soul.

Buried in there were my favorite pieces, the ones I actually wore, the ones that felt like me. But they were shoved behind trendy things I thought I “needed.”

Turns out my soul wasn’t much different. All the right priorities—faith, family, peace—were still there. Just hidden. Buried under striving, hustle culture, and the world’s voice telling me what I “should” be.

Simplifying closet and soul with restful rhythms — Bible study and coffee bringing peace.

The Gift of Reordering

God has been gently inviting me to reorder both.

Just like my closet feels lighter with fewer, better pieces, my soul feels freer when I create space for restful rhythms. It’s easier to get dressed when you have the right things. And it’s easier to live with peace when your priorities are in the right order.

I’m still in the fight. Still quick to drift back toward clutter, chaos, and comparison. But slowly, I see God teaching me how liberating it is to have less—less noise, less hustle—and how much lighter my soul feels when I give it what it longs for: Him.

Why I’m Sharing This

This moment with my closet is why I started Linen + Light. It’s not just about style tips or capsule wardrobes (though you’ll find plenty here). It’s about learning how simplifying the outside makes room for God to reorder the inside.

Because here’s the truth: your closet can be a place of chaos, or it can be a place of peace. And your soul? The same.

Around here, it’s never about perfect. It’s about Style Simplified. Faith Multiplied.
